This is a video to compare two different mic positons suitable for use as ‘overheads’, mics placed above the drums, primarily to pick up the cymbals. Having a stereo pair of overhead mics can create a wide drum sound, different positions can have different results.
In this video I use a spaced pair mic setup, the mics equidistant to the drums, facing vertical either side of the kit. I then use an XY pair setup, above the kit, directly in the middle, in line with the previous mics. I compare how each mic setup sounds, then put them both in context with a (quite heavy!) drums mix.
